This study explores domestic violence against women in Mashhad using a narrative criminology approach.
Narrative criminology emphasizes the analysis of personal stories to uncover the causes and processes leading to criminal behavior.
The research involved 110 female victims of domestic violence selected through purposive sampling, collecting in-depth narratives about their experiences.
Findings reveal that domestic violence in Mashhad stems from a complex interplay of individual, family, economic, and cultural factors.
Key individual factors include lack of parental care, addiction, and identity disorders, while family-related issues such as marital rape and child marriage play significant roles.
Economic dependency and poverty further intensify women's vulnerability, particularly in migrant communities facing socioeconomic marginalisation.
Islamic jurisprudential principles, including the prohibition of harm (La Darar) and the preservation of human dignity, provide normative foundations for preventing such violence.
Based on these findings, the study suggests preventive policies emphasising legal reforms, economic empowerment, and public awareness aligned with Islamic teachings to reduce domestic violence and support victims effectively.
