Iraq is among the five countries most vulnerable to desertification and climate change globally. It faces a multitude of environmental challenges, including severe water shortages and poor water quality, declining rainfall, and temperatures that consistently exceed seasonal norms—particularly during the winter. Furthermore, the country grapples with air pollution driven by high emissions of greenhouse gases—such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—alongside other pollutants. These significant environmental issues and challenges necessitate that Iraq take concrete, substantive action and implement policies grounded in clear, scientifically sound foundations to mitigate these problems. Renewable energy serves as a vital tool for curbing the greenhouse gas emissions that result from the extraction and consumption of fossil fuels, as well as from the flaring of large quantities of associated gas during oil production. As a clean, sustainable, and environmentally friendly energy source, the adoption of renewable energy also aligns with the goals and agenda of the 2030 Sustainable Development.
